Art Direction: Product Photography
As a collectibles company, Mondo’s product photography has to be top-notch. But this poses a real challenge. While Mondo has its own brand identity, we’re also tasked with selling products that span a wide range of properties (Marvel superheroes, Universal monsters, cult movies, etc.) and a wide range of product categories (tiki mugs, puzzles, posters, vinyl, toys, etc.). So I’m especially proud of the art direction and styling I’ve done on these shoots, which capture the essence of all of those variables and bring them together into images that really pop.
With great I.P. comes great responsibility.
These Spider-Man Mecha toys are a great example of the challenge we face with Mondo product photography. Spider-Man is obviously a beloved property, and it’s our job to make sure that our photography speaks to what makes the character great. In this series, we worked hard to photograph our toys in a range of dynamic poses so that we could then add them into an original comic strip. As a result, it looks like Spidey is jumping off the page.

The Year of Puzzles
With everyone stuck at home in 2020, puzzles became a hot product category. So we wanted to make sure that our puzzles really stood out from the pack. Along with the incredible designs and I.P. that we licensed, we made sure that our photography spoke to people who genuinely love puzzles (like me!). That meant a lot of action shots, which also meant a LOT of time assembling puzzles in the evening after work. But it was worth the effort.
